Falling Skies Review Roundup

With the show premiering a week from today, I figured it'd be a good time to post a collection of Falling Skies reviews that have been published by various news sources around the web.

  • The Hollywood Reporter gushes over the show pointing out how that while it may not be getting the same hype as Spielberg's other series Terra Nova, Falling Skies ends up being a "superb and entertaining sci-fi series from Steven Spielberg that may ultimately be a stronger series than anyone expected".

  • The Examiner doles out the praise for Falling Skies as it mentions the suprising strength of the younger actors as well as the quality of the effects for a television show while concluding "there is a lot to pay attention to in every episode, and we certainly can’t wait to see more."

  • Grasping for the Wind had some mixed feelings about the premiere with strong acting and plot being sometimes dragged down by the introduction of religion and a lack of initial backstory.

  • The NY Times mostly recaps the premiere rather than review it, though they do single out effectiveness of the "slow reveal" that Spielberg properties are known for.

  • As previously mentioned Action Chick Flick enjoyed the premiere and ends by saying "the Falling Skies premier was great, and I am definitely looking forward to the next episode."

As you can see, most who have seen the Falling Skies premiere are excited about the new show. Obviously the premiere is just one episode and doesn't necessarily encapsulate the quality of the entire series, but the early reviews are definitely promising.

Falling Skies Game Last Defense

TNT has launched a new web game called Last Defense to promote Falling Skies. The game is a fairly standard tower defense type game so if you like those kinds of games, you may want to check it out.

I played it for a little bit but honestly didn't find it all that fun. There were also quite a few glitches, such as units ignoring enemies occasionally and the wave ending successfully even when there are enemies left on the screen. It's cool that they put up a web game to promote the show and it shows that TNT seems to definitely be behind the new series.

Action Flick Chick's Take on the Falling Skies Premiere

Apparently Action Flick Chick was able to get a sneak peak at the 2 hour Falling Skies premiere and has quite a lot of good things to say.  It's a spoiler free review so there's no harm in checking it out if you're looking for even more reason to get excited for the show.

One thing in particular to note from the review.  It sounds like the show starts off with a pretty large amount of survivors already working together.   I had figured it the series was going to show very few survivors actually being in one place together.  While I knew Noah Wyle and crew were part of a bigger survivor group, I'm pleastantly surprised to learn that the bigger war looks to be presented as well.

First Look at Alien Skitter

If you're looking for some photos of the oppressive alien skitters, you may want to click right here.  TV Line has a couple photos showing off the mechanized aliens along with a decent introduction to the show's plot for those that haven't been exposed to it yet.

While I don't think the show needs amazing special effects, they can't be distractingly bad.  My guess is they will not be anything special but should be enough to let us immerse ourselves in the story.  I just don't want awful CG from like shows Merlin and Sanctuary - at times the graphics were so bad they could ruin a serious moment with laugh out loud attempts at special effects.

Falling Skies Survivor Blog

Last week I mentioned the Falling Skies web comic as one of the various marketing effors TNT is putting online to try and drum up anticipation for their new show.  Today I'd like to point you to the 2nd Mass survivor blog, a blog that's done from the point of view of a Jason, a survivor of the alien invasion.

It's a pretty cool companion to the other material we've gotten from TNT as it tries to help put the reader into the mindset of what the survivors must be going through.  You get some insight into initial reactions to the invasion as well as what it must be like to try and adapt to a world that's been completely flipped on it's head.

As with the web comic, there may be a few spoilers in the blog, though because we haven't seen the first few episodes yet, I'm not sure how much the blog and comic would be giving away.  The blog follows the 2nd Mass which is the same group that our main characters in the show are a part of, though it's mostly from a person named "Jason" and I don't know of any characters in the show named "Jason" so it may be fairly safe to read the blog without fear of spoilers.  I would recommend you start with the first post and read from there.

Posts for the blog seem to be happening at a rate of about once per month, so it's likely there will only be one or two more posts until the show airs.  I doubt they will keep the blog going while the show is on television, but I guess you never know.

Falling Skies Web Comic

For those of you that didn't know, TNT has an ongoing Falling Skies web comic leading up to the pilot episode.  The comic appears to have 16 chapters with 13 already published.  The story in the web comic follows many of the main characters we will be seeing in the show and goes into some of the plight the humans are going through after the invasion.

I won't be covering too many specifics about the contents of the comic since I don't want to reveal any spoilers to those that either haven't seen the comic yet or are holding off until the show airs.  It's unclear how much of the comic will be covered by the show itself so I don't know if any of the plotlines will intersect or even if the comic comes before or after the show's timeline.

I'll post news of new chapters being released (which should happen ever couple weeks) for those that are following the web comic.
